Off-Road Vehicle Trails
Off-Highway vehicles include four-wheel drive vehicles, motorcycles, motorbikes, and all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s). All roads normally open for public travel are available to OHV’s provided the vehicle and operator are in compliance with the vehicle laws of the state. Since most ATV’s cannot be licensed or registered in VA or WV, they are restricted to the ATV Trails ONLY. Lee Ranger District has 2 ATV Trails, Peters Mill Run and Tasker’s Gap. Please read the regulations before riding on the trails. Remember that improper handling of the vehicles can damage these lands. You, as a driver, must assume responsibility for proper off-highway vehicle operation so others may enjoy the beauty of the forest. Riding double on an ATV and riding without a helmet are subject to a fine. Violators have had their vehicle impounded until fines are paid in court. These trails are under a half mile in length, often circular, have parking nearby and have signs along the trail that explain a theme, such as the geology of the mountain, or the iron-making process that left behind the stone blast furnaces. These trails are restricted to foot traffic.
Directions: Motorized trails are grouped together on Massanutten Mountain, along the west side, between Moreland Gap Road and the Woodstock Tower Road. There is a parking area at the north end, off the tower road, and in the center, in Edinburg Gap, where there is also a restroom.
Mountain Biking
With close to 400 miles of trails and over 190,000 acres, the Lee Ranger District is designed to be a multi-purpose forest used by hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, hunters and OHV enthusiasts.
Bicycling is permitted on all forest trails except those designated as interpretive trails (Discovery Way Trail, Massanutten Story Book Trail, Lion's Tale Trail, Wildflower Trail, Pig Iron and Charcoal Trails). Mountain bikers may use the available roads and trails year round. There are no permits, fees, or registration required for individuals or small groups.
Massanutten & Great North Mountain (Trails Illustrated Map 792) - a good map for trip planning. This map covers the entire district, complete with topographic information. Scale is 1 inch = 1.18 miles. This map lists all of the trails in the district, the color of the blazes, their length, and their degree of difficulty.
