You will find exhibits and information about recreation and management on the Lee Ranger District and information about the numerous hiking trails and camping opportunities offered in the Lee Ranger District. You can also purchase trail maps, forest maps, books, and souvenirs.

 

Massanutten Visitors Center

3220 East Lee Highway (Rt. 211), New Market, VA 22844 540-740-8310 Hours: 8:00am-- 4:30pm daily and weekends from April to October. The center is open weekends only in November through closing in mid-November. The Visitor Center was once the location of a Lunch Room and Filling Station and later the site of Mountain Top Haven. The Center is located on Rt. 211 at the New Market Gap. You will find exhibits and information about recreation and management on the Lee Ranger District and information about the numerous hiking trails and camping opportunities offered in the Lee Ranger District. Camp Roosevelt

 

Open: Spring & Summer   The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) is gone, but their legacy still remains.  “The boys of Roosevelt” built many of the recreation areas, roads, and trails, enjoyed today.  Many of the pathways and low foundations of this first CCC camp still remain on the grounds. Camp Roosevelt CCC Alumni constructed the picnic shelter in 1983.  Today, Camp Roosevelt is enjoyed by many for camping, picnicking, and hiking.

Directions: Take exit 279 off I-81. Turn east on SR 675. At intersection of Rt. 11 and SR 675 in the center of Edinburg (T-intersection),  turn left onto US 11. Make another right turn back onto SR 675 at the north end of Edinburg. Follow SR 675 for 5.9 miles over Massanutten Mountain to STOP sign at Kings Crossing (T-intersection).  Turn right and continue on SR 675 for 3.4 miles to an X-intersection of SR675, FDR 274, and SR 730.  Turn left, still on SR 675.  Camp entrance is 0.3 miles up, on the left side of the road.

 

 

Elizabeth Furnace

This site has family and group camping, hiking, fishing in nearby Passage Creek, picnicking,and exploring the area.  Amenities include improved campsites, warm showers, and restrooms.

 

Directions: Take exit 296 off I-81.  Turn east, on VA 55 for 1.4 miles.  In center of Strasburg (traffic light), turn left to remain on VA 55.  After 5.0 miles, turn right onto SR 678in small community of Waterlick.  The recreation area will be on your left in about 3.5 miles.  There are three entrances, about a half mile apart.  Entrance to the Group Campground appears first, followed by the entrance to the "Day Use" area (picnic ground), and finally the entrance tot he Family (or "overnight") campground.

 

Little Fort

Little Fort is a minimally developed recreation area near the meadow that was once a rest stop for a stagecoach line. Come and relax in this scenic area. Trail heads   to our off-road vehicle trails are nearby. 

 

Directions: Take exit 279 off I-81 and turn east on SR 675.  In the center of Edinburg (T-

intersection), turn left onto US 11.  At north end of Edinburg, turn right onto SR 675. Follow SR 675 for 5.9 miles over Massanutten Mountain to a STOP sign at Kings Crossing (T-

intersection).  Turn left (north) and drive 7.3 miles to Detrick.  Turn left onto SR 758 in Detrick and drive 2.7 miles to camp entrance on left. 

 

 

Wolf Gap Campground

Enjoy a wooded retreat on the Virginia and West Virginia state lines. Once the site of Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, Wolf Gap F-3, this campground provides 10 campsites complete with tent pad, picnic table and fire ring.  There is a small picnic area with grills and picnic tables.  There is no fee to camp here. Water is available at a hand-pumped spigot. Toilets are vault-style.  There are a number of hiking trails leading from Wolf Gap Campground.  

 

Directions: Take exit 279 off I-81. Turn west on SR 675. Drive 3.5 miles to STOP sign at Va 42.  Turn right, and take next left to continue on SR 675.  Remain on SR 675 (there is a leftturn at the far side of the one-lane, low water bridge) and drive 3.1 miles to a fork in the road.  Stay right, on SR 675, and drive another 3.4 miles to the top of the mountain.  Caution, this is a narrow, winding road with poor sight lines.  The entrance is on your right.
